The Spy Kids movie was the first representation I saw in pop culture of children who had even a slightly dysfunctional family. But I just donвЂ™t want to have to see it or hear about it. I want people to have good relationships with their families. It feels petty, especially because itвЂ™s not like I donвЂ™t want other people to have happy childhoods untouched by dysfunction. Seeing real-life examples of people having close emotional bonds with their parents over and over again on social media makes me feel like I am constantly holding a funeral for the kind of childhood that part of me wishes I could have had. ItвЂ™s like being in perpetual mourning while I continue to parent and re-parent myself.

When I scroll social media, IвЂ™m hit with the reminder that no matter how I heal, I must always deal with the wounded child inside of me. I know not everyoneвЂ™s childhoods were this bad, even if they do have dysfunctional families-but no matter how far peopleвЂ™s family dynamics stray from those in viral videos, my hunch is that they hurt just as much for others with less than вЂњperfectвЂќ situations. Instead, in its place are memories of constant screaming matches and locking myself in my room to get away from my parents. The time for my parents to have given me a functional, fun childhood worthy of lighthearted inside jokes on home videos has passed. The first time I saw it, I rolled my eyes, but by the 10th time IвЂ™d watched it, I couldnвЂ™t stop crying-not because I wanted it, but because I realized that not only did I never have such a carefree experience with my parents, but I never would. In one that annoys me most, a father cuts a large slice of cake for his daughter and then pretends to turn into a dinosaur, pecking at the cake and throwing it around the room at his daughter and wife as they laugh and scream.
